Former Japanese Ambassador to Serbia Tadashi Nagai was presented with Belgrade's most prestigious award - the title of honorary citizen - at the Belgrade City Hall on Friday, August 20, 2010.
Presenting the award, Mayor Dragan Đilas said it was the only way for Belgrade and its residents to thank Nagai for everything he did in the decade and a half he worked in the city. Đilas assessed that no one else in recent history showed as much good will, adding that Nagai is a great friend to Belgrade and Serbia. City Council Chairman Aleksandar Antic said that Nagai showed great affection for Belgrade and a lot of respect for Serbian customs and tradition.
Since 2000, the Japanese people and government have sent EUR 198mn in aid to Serbia, including canceling EUR 84mn in debt. The City of Belgrade received EUR 30mn in donations from the Japanese government, EUR 27mn of which went to city institutions and EUR 3mn to state institutions.
The ceremony at the City Hall, which also included musical performances, was attended by Culture Minister Nebojša Bradić, Education Minister Željko Obradović, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science Božidar Đelić, representatives of the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce, members of the diplomatic corps and the Serbian Orthodox Church, and public figures.
